Shakespeare Garden
Wessington Springs, South Dakota

In observance of our state's centennial in 1989, The Shakespeare Garden Society of Wessington Springs, a not-for-profit corporation, was established to purchase, restore, maintain and improve the Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage, a project begun in 1927 by husband and wife professors at Wessington Springs Seminary.

Funds obtained from membership dues, donations, grants and various events continue to finance the work of the Society, along with countless hours of volunteer labor. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Anne Hathaway Cottage is the only thatched roof building in South Dakota and the Shakespeare Garden are the state's oldest.

The Cottage and Garden are the site of teas, tours, Maypole Dance, one-act plays, Christmas event, and even weddings. The Garden is open during daylight hours. Hours for the cottage are listed below.
